UnWind by Maven Labs is a nootropic formula designed to help you get a better night’s sleep and wake up feeling refreshed and energized. The nootropic combines several vitamins, botanicals and synthetic compounds that combine to help you fall asleep faster and experience higher quality sleep. After taking UnWind by Maven Labs for several nights, we did in fact find a pronounced effect on the time it took to fall asleep, the quality of sleep, and the feeling of energy upon waking.

The botanical ingredients inside of UnWind are all shown to increase the GABA levels within the brain. Put simply, GABA is a chemical, created naturally in the body, that helps our body and mind react to external stresses. It is effectively an inhibitor of the central nervous system, calming down the mind. A few of the ingredients, Valerian Root, Chamomile, L-Theanine, and Passion Flower, are known to have pronounced effects on sleep.

Valerian is well known for its sedative qualities and its ability to relax the central nervous system and the smooth muscle groups. It has been used as a sleeping aid for hundreds of years especially when there is excitation or difficulty in falling to sleep due to nervousness. Similarly, drinking chamomile tea for sleep has been proven to work by reducing anxiety and chamomile tea benefits relaxing nerves and muscles. And finally, passion flower helps you mellow out by boosting the brain’s levels of  GABA, which lowers your brain activity.

While these botanicals are proven (by independent studies not done by Maven Labs), one of the main ingredients in UnWind is Melatonin. Melatonin is a well known supplement for its effects on sleep. Melatonin is produced naturally by the body when it is at rest, and in a dark calming place. There are many things in our modern lives that stop the body’s production of melatonin, one being the blue light in phone and computer screens. UnWind includes 3mg of Melatonin in it’s ingredients list. This is admittedly on the higher side of some of the sleep nootropics we’ve tested. However, no ill effects were noted as a result of the Melatonin levels in UnWind. Furthermore, 3mg is well within the safe dosage of this supplement.

What should I expect when taking UnWind by Maven Labs?

We tried UnWind and did experience many of the advertised effects. There was a noticeable calm and drowsy feeling about 10 minutes after taking the sleep aid and we did fall asleep quite a bit faster. Dreams were vivid and clearly remembered upon waking. Waking up resulted in little to no feeling of grogginess or drowsiness. We noted a level of energy consistent with a good night’s sleep. This, of course, is just our experience. As no one on our testing team suffers from insomnia, it would be helpful if users with this condition could leave a review below.

Is it Safe?

Maven Labs does include a complete list of ingredients as well as their amounts on both the website and the nootropic’s label. The company does link to additional information on each of the ingredients contained within their products so users can learn more. However, Maven Labs does not provide Certificates of Authority for any of the ingredients contained within their products. Presenting CoAs is becoming a more common practice for nootropic manufacturers. In doing this, users can confirm for themselves that the ingredients contained in a nootropic are what they claim to be. Withholding a CoA for UnWind does not make it an unsafe product, but users should take it at their own risk.
